Al Baraka Bank Invests R35 000 in Extra Matric Tuition, Support, and Stationery at Disadvantaged School
17 FEBRUARY
A severely under-resourced high school on KwaZulu-Natal’s lower south coast, serving rural learners striving for a quality education, has once again received a vital financial boost from Al Baraka Bank. In 2025, the bank invested R35 000 in extra tuition, exam preparation support, and essential stationery for Matric learners at Sinevuso Secondary School, outside Ixopo.
In addition to this ongoing support, the bank awarded laptop computers to the school’s top three Matriculants, recognizing their hard work and academic achievements.
Al Baraka Bank first adopted Sinevuso Secondary School in 2014 as part of its Legacy Corporate Social Responsibility Project, celebrating the bank’s 25th anniversary. Over the past decade, Al Baraka has remained committed to improving education in disadvantaged communities through sustained financial contributions and resource support.
Al Baraka Bank’s Sustainability and Social Responsibility Officer, Cheryl Ramkumar, emphasized the long-term impact of this initiative:
“Education remains one of the most powerful tools to break the cycle of poverty, yet many rural schools continue to face enormous challenges—including inadequate state funding, a lack of essential learning materials, and in some cases, a shortage of basic services such as water and electricity.”
“At Al Baraka Bank, we firmly believe that every child deserves the opportunity to excel, regardless of their background. Our goal is to empower these learners with the resources and support they need to achieve their full potential and secure brighter futures for themselves and their families.”
The bank’s continued support has yielded significant results, with Matric pass rates consistently improving since the introduction of its intervention programme. Through additional tuition, subject-specific tutoring, and comprehensive study materials, learners have been better equipped to tackle their final exams with confidence.
The school support programme has enabled learners to stay in school, participate in extra classes, and improve their academic performance. In addition, the sponsorship has covered the provision of advanced tuition in critical subjects, ensuring that learners are not left behind.
“Al Baraka Bank remains committed to playing an active role in shaping South Africa’s future by investing in its young minds. By providing opportunities for education and skills development, we are helping to build a stronger, more resilient generation that can contribute meaningfully to society.”
